Train Your Dog Yourself
from:Do It Yourself Dog Training - It Takes Patience
If you don't live near a dog training school or would prefer to
train your dog on your own, you should know that you are capable
of doing just that. People have been training their own dogs for
centuries. One positive aspect in training your own dog is that
you will save a good deal of money.
Training a dog takes a lot of patience but can be very
rewarding. When you train your own dog, the bond is that much
stronger between yourself and your pet. The knowledge that you
were the one who taught your dog to behave nicely and do fun
tricks will give you a sense of pride as well.
The first training that occurs usually involves "house breaking"
- getting your dog to go outside of your house to "go". Some
dogs learn to do this very quickly while some take a little
longer - much like potty training a child. Take your puppy out
for frequent walks. When they "go" outside, reward them with
praise and petting. Treats are useful as well, but many owners
prefer the other method as treats are not always handy. Before
you step outside with your dog, say "It's time to go potty!"
When your dog does "go potty", say, "Good BOY! You went potty
outside!" and follow up with petting or a treat.
When your dog does go in the house, don't yell. Yelling confuses
most dogs and many times they will have an emotional reaction
and rebel - again, much like a child. If you catch them when
they are going, tell them firmly, "You go outside to go potty!"
and then take them outside. If they go when you don't see them
and you discover it later, show them what it was they did, and
tell them again, "You go outside to go potty!" and take them
outside. Again, if they do "go" outside, praise them and reward
them.
The system is much the same for discouraging other unwanted
behaviors.
When it comes to learning tricks, use only praise and reward. If
your dog does not do as told, you may demonstrate by gently
pushing on their hind quarters to get them to sit, while saying
"sit" and then rewarding them with praise and petting. Using
hand gestures along with speech is a good idea as well. Make eye
contact with your dog when you are training them. This lets them
know who's the boss.
You can find DVD's that demonstrate training methods and books
that describe how to train your dog online, or at pet stores and
book stores. If a friend or family member has a dog which they
have trained well, ask them for some tips in different areas of
dog training.
With a lot of love and patience, it won't be long before your
dog knows what they are supposed to do and does it. The beauty
of training your dog yourself is that in the end, they love you
all that much more.
