Dog Adoptions And New Puppies - Getting Them Adjusted Is Not Easy
from:Whether you have just adopted a pet or you are bringing home a
brand new puppy, it is important to know that the process of
helping them adjust is just as much a responsibility for your
family as it is for you. Imagine being packed up in a box one
day and waking up on another planet, living with a family of
space aliens who wanted you to answer their every beck and call.
Life isn't easy for a new puppy in your home. However lucky they
may be to be there, it will take some getting used to for
everyone involved. There are some things that you can do to help
them make this transition as seamlessly as possible. Before long
you, your loved ones, and your new puppy will all be one big
happy family.
Give Them Time
One of the important things to remember when you bring your
puppy home is that they need time to themselves just like people
do. While you might be okay with this, small children may have a
hard time understanding it, so if you have small children to
deal with you may want to talk to them about their new dog
needing some alone time to help him get used to you guys. They
may not like it, but after a while it will become routine and
shouldn't be a problem.
Give Them Their Own Space
As far as alone time goes for your pet, it is usually a good
idea if they have their own space to retreat to when things get
overwhelming. If you find them hiding under your computer desk a
great deal, or sliding under your bed, consider grabbing them a
crate that they can grow with. Not only will this help with
potty training, but it is like giving your puppy his or her own
room and they will appreciate it—especially if you have
small worrisome children.
Provide Structure and Discipline
The last thing that you are going to want to do with your
adorable ball of fur is provide structure and discipline, but
this is just as essential as a collar and leash. They need to
know that some things are okay, and some things are not; they
respond a great deal to tones and inflections in your voice so
keep this in mind when speaking to them, as young dogs do not
quite understand words yet.
Walk them around the yard with a leash, and show them where it
is okay to go to the bathroom. Letting them go is probably more
convenient for you now, but when you find that your little guy
has figured out a way to dig themselves up under the fence and
is roaming freely around the neighborhood, you may wish that you
had provided them with that structure as far as the yard is
concerned.
The last thing you probably want to do is go in the back yard
with a dog, but doing so lets them know that this is part of
your home and you have expectations, but also that you are there
if they are afraid of the big outdoors.
Bringing home a new puppy is fun, but it is not all games.
Provide your puppy with structure, routine, and a space with a
comfy bed or crate where they can spend some time alone. As
their training progresses, you will find that things go much
more smoothly this way.
