Crate Training For A Happy Pup

from:

I personally found that using a crate in the house to be a great
success in the training a dog. A crate can also be used in the
transportation of your pet to and from different locations.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to bring a new dog
into a house and just let it have free reign. Because I know how
much trouble a little puppy can get in when not supervise. Not
to mention the accidents that occur in the potty training
department when a puppy is not confined certain times of the day.

Now the first couple days to a week when the puppy spends the
night in the crate, he is not going to appreciate his new
location. But one must remember the little puppy will more then
likely just have left his/her mother. Some dogs begin to feel
more comfortable in the crate quicker than others, depending on
the makeup of the dog. Make sure you leave a couple of toys and
a comfortable mat for him lay on during your time away from the
puppy.

Under the crate be sure to put down a layer of plastic on the
floor, then some cardboard followed by the crate itself. Because
the first week or so the little puppy will have accidents in
there in his potty training. Always put the dog outside first
thing in the morning, this will get him into a routine of going
to the washroom outside. What I do is get a bowl of food and put
it outside and let the dog feed their first thing in the
morning. And after a few days go by it will automatically go to
the door to be let out and to have his breakfast.

Now some people think putting a dog in a crate is cruel, but
just the opposite is true. Because the dog wandering around the
house without supervision will allow the dog, to chew and eat
things that are harmful to him. Which can do damage to his
health.

The type of crate that I use is made up of steel wire. You can
get plastic ones if you desire, but for me, the easiest to clean
and maintain seems to be the steel crate. When the steel crate
is not in use, can be folded up flat and stored away, not taking
up much room at all. I've used steel crates for my dogs for over
40 years now, and never had a problem with them.
