What Kind of Puppy should I get?
from:Establishing realistic expectations includes becoming informed
before you make the new addition to your family. Last time we
talked about establishing consistent expectations for your puppy
within your household-but how do you know what to expect from
your puppy? This question has a surprisingly simple answer...
Do your homework! Chances are that many other people have
had experiences with the breed of puppy you're considering
adding to your family. By taking the time to research
personality and training characteristics of the breed, you can
prepare yourself and your family for these issues. If you're
taking the time to answer these questions ahead of time, you can
weigh the benefits and drawbacks of certain kinds and ages of
puppies to make an informed decision. If the puppy has already
been added to your family, it's still a good idea to do some
research. This will prepare you for issues that may arise in the
future, and some possible ways to address them.
Example:
Your family consists of two small children in your household
whose eyes light up every time they see a puppy walking his
owner down the street. You are considering getting them a puppy
for Christmas. What kind of dog do you think would be best with
your children?
A. Toy poodle
B. Chihuahua
C. Laborador retreiver
D. Cocker spaniel
According to GoPetsAmerica.com (and many veterinarians),
retreivers are sought worldwide for their companionship and have
a reputation of being very good with children. This category
includes Laborador, Golden, Chesepeake Bay, and other curly and
flat-coated retrievers. If you chose a smaller dog like a toy
poodle because your children thought it was cute, you may have
problems with aggression when the children pick up Fluffy the
wrong way or come between him and his food.
This brings up another good source of information that you might
overlook-your local veterinarian! Veterinary staff come in
contact with many types and breeds of dogs, and can often tell
you very quickly what kind of dog may fit best into your family.
This is also an important consideration when you already have
another dog(s) in your family. You want the addition of a new
family member to be a positive, not negative, experience!
